In the year 2015, world leaders should be coming together to celebrate the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the broadest, most ambitious and wide raging statement on the future of human development ever conceived.
The MDGs have provided a common framework for everyone working for the good of humanity to ground their work in real targets. The second MDG states "that all children, boys and girls will complete their primary education" and this is a bold target indeed.
Unfortunately, it does not appear that those leaders will be celebrating the achievement of the goal as there are currently still an estimated 67 million children that are not in education. Approximately one third of those children -around 22 million- suffer from some form of disability. Without specifically addressing the needs of this excluded group it will not be possible to reach, and celebrate, the achievement of MDG 2.
The UK government has made strong commitments both nationally and internationally to guarantee that all children can access its education programs. Unfortunately they are not meeting those commitments. This month we will be taking action to generate parliamentary pressure to make sure they do.
