Bridging the Gap: Why the European Union must address the Global Fund’s Funding crisis
Despite its tremendous success, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria faces serious funding gaps. As a result, in December 2011 the Global Fund was forced to cancel its next funding round, leaving recipient countries without the financial support needed to combat their disease epidemics.
World TB Day 2012: Funding for AIDS, TB and Malaria: A looming crisis
The establishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS TB and Malaria in 2002 kicked off the one of the most extraordinary decades in the history of public health. An Inadequate Response: More Than Two Decades of Complacency in Addressing the TB/HIV Co-Epidemic
An Inadequate Response deals with TB/HIV co-infection.
The tuberculosis (TB) bacillus and the HIV virus have formed a powerful alliance and are together responsible for more than five million deaths per year. In turn, TB is leading to increased mortality rates among people living with HIV/AIDS and complicating treatment.
Enduring Neglect: The World Bank's Inadequate Response to Africa's TB Emergency
In light of Africa’s escalating tuberculosis (TB) emergency, World Bank financing for TB programming on the continent is inadequate. In 2005, the Bank provided Africa a total of US$585 million in health-sector financing, of which just 0.6% was explicitly directed to TB control.
This is in stark contrast to World Bank financing to fight TB outside of Africa, and in even starter contrast to its funding to fight AIDS and Malaria, which both have large and dedicated funding streams - as they should.
