This month, we discussed how the new Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), announced by the Prime Minister on 16 June, will need to ensure that the UK’s impressive record of using our overseas aid budget to alleviate poverty continues into the future. There is a very important role for advocacy over the next few months, to make sure that the new arrangements in Government and Parliament for deciding and monitoring how UK aid is spent are as effective as they can be. Check out our July campaign action here.
We were joined by former Chair of Parliament’s International Development Committee Stephen Twigg, who shared his insider experience of Parliamentary scrutiny of the UK aid budget, working as part of a cross-party team to ensure the focus of aid squarely on poverty eradication and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. He urged us to use our voices to ensure that these remain a central goal of the new Department.
