UK to host crucial global immunisation conference

London, 13 February 2019: RESULTS UK welcomes today’s announcement that the UK will play a leading role in ensuring millions more children are vaccinated by hosting the pledging conference of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance (Gavi) in 2020.

Vaccines remain of the most successful and cost-effective global health interventions of our time - averting an estimated 20 million deaths and 500 million cases of illness in the decade of vaccines from 2011 to 2020. The UK, through its investment in Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has been a world-leader in global immunisation efforts and helped to immunise 76 million children against vaccine-preventable diseases, saving 1.4 million lives globally. Investment in immunisation remains high value for money, with every $1 spent returning between $16 and $44 dollars in economic benefits.

Despite the known value of vaccines millions of children still miss out on basic vaccines and 1 in 10 children still receive no vaccines at all. Only 7% of children in the poorest 73 countries receive all World Health Organisation recommended vaccines.

Aaron Oxley, Executive Director at RESULTS UK said:

“We are delighted that the UK is hosting Gavi’s pledging conference next year. As a founding member of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, this signals the UK’s continued leadership to reach every last child with immunisation and global health. Hosting the conference signals recognition of the incredible work of the Alliance partnership and the importance of ensuring that it is able to continue to help save millions of lives and prevent millions more cases of disease and disability.”

He added:

“The UK’s investment in the Gavi creates a lifeline for millions of children who would otherwise have no access to life-saving vaccines. Now the UK and other donors must ensure that Gavi has all of the resources it needs for the next decade ahead in order to ensure every child is fully immunised.”
